Thanks to the fights in which these dogs participated, only the best and strongest dogs survived; thus, a distinctive breed began to emerge. The tribes that moved across the land also took the sport with them and, therefore, the dogs too.

By the 1700's there were two primary bull fighting dogs that emerged. They were the Blue poll of Scotland and the Alunt from Ireland, both referred to as bulldogs. The Alunt of that time resembled something more closely to a Great Dane and officials presume it later contributed to the Alono of Spain breed of dog.

Thus, the Pitbull was a selectively bred canine for hundreds of years to fight other dogs. While other dogs were bred to be hunters or pet dogs, Pitbulls were bred to face other dogs in mortal combats. Thanks to the law that prohibited these bloody games, Pitbulls nowadays are used to brighten up the life of owners.
